Students held hostage at Wisconsin school tell of Ordeal

Trapped in their classroom with a student gunman, a group  of terrified Wisconsin high schoolers worked desperately to keep their captor calm by  chatting and  laughing with him about  hunting and fishing.

The 15-year-old gunman eventually shot himself as police stormed the room at Mariette high school hours later Monday evening. Mariette police chief Jeff Skorik said sophomore Samuel Hegel of Porter field died at 10:44 a.m. Tuesday.

Hegel had allowed five of his 24 hostages-23 students and  a teacher -- out after nearly five hours and finally all of them emerged unharmed. student hostage Zach Campbell said the gunman seemed depressed, bet he didn't think he meant his classmates any harm.

"I didn't know really what to think. i was just hoping to get out alive," Campbell said  Tuesday
